Newsday education writer John Hildebrand sat down with News 12 for his take on Long Island's school votes Tuesday.

He says schools received a good amount of state funding this year, which led to fewer complaints.

As of Tuesday night, most districts had passed their budgets, including New Suffolk, which proposed piercing the state's 2 percent tax hike cap.

"We could be in for a historic year," Hildebrand says. "We have had in the past where 98, 99 percent of the budgets passed, but we're still waiting to see if we set a new record."

Hildebrand also says that Valley Stream passed a budget that reduced taxes by 15 percent, but it may have to raise them next year.

"We have to wait and see what's going to happen on the federal level," he says, noting that it's possible the new administration could cut funding.
