News 12 took a look at what should and should not be recycled ahead of Earth Day.
Adrienne Esposito, executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, said that shampoo bottles and hand and dish soap containers can be recycled - and there's no need to worry about peeling off any stickers.
When it comes to pizza boxes, Esposito said a dot of grease on the box is OK, but if there’s more than that, and if there’s cheese on the box, don’t recycle it. If the top of the box is clean, however, you can separate that part and recycle it.
Ever wonder about what to do with those envelopes that have a plastic window? Esposito said if you can, take the plastic out and then recycle the paper envelope, but if you can’t, you can still recycle the whole envelope in the paper bin.
For peanut butter containers, tomato sauce jars, etc., make sure to clean it out before throwing it in the recycling bin.
“Recycling is important because it reduces our solid waste and also we can make products from those recycled materials” which means we are using fewer natural resources and less energy. Esposito added “We have to produce less waste in order to manage our waste stream better.
