A premature baby, only hours old, was dropped off at the Wantagh Fire Department on Thanksgiving.
Nicknamed "Baby Hope" by firefighters, the child was taken to Nassau University Medical Center to be evaluated. She weighs 3 pounds, 13 ounces, and appears to be in good health, according to doctors.
Fire officials say the infant was dropped off around noon by someone close to the mother. Baby Hope still had part of her umbilical cord attached.
The Wantagh firehouse is a designated Baby Safe Haven drop off location, which means anyone can drop off a baby anonymously with no questions asked.
Baby Safe Haven officials say the mother contacted them Wednesday. She was given options, and then had the baby on Thursday.
"It has to be the most single difficult decision a pregnant mother has to make," says Scott Cohen, of the AMT Children of Hope Foundation.
New York law says an infant can be surrendered within 30 days of the child's birth at a safe haven facility, which includes any firehouse, police station, or hospital, without facing abandonment charges.
Baby Hope will be placed in temporary foster care upon leaving NUMC.
