New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says his office is now joining the illegal dumping investigation in Suffolk County.
Schneiderman attended a public meeting on the issue at Suffolk Community College. He also visited Roberto Clemente Park, which is now closed after it tested positive for high levels of asbestos in the soil.
"For them to dump 32,000 tons of solid waste that is required by law to go to these solid waste landfills is a disgrace," says Schneiderman.
Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota is investigating five potentially toxic dumping sites in the Town of Islip. Investigators say debris was also dumped about 7 miles away from Roberto Clemente Park into the wetlands in Deer Park. The wooded area is state-protected wetlands.
A man, who asked to remain anonymous, told News 12 that someone driving a bulldozer recently asked him to move his car so he could gain access to the area.
Officials have taken soil samples from the Deer Park creek. Richard Gohr, with the Town of Babylon, says no matter what is found - dumping on state-protected wetlands is illegal.
Schneiderman is encouraging anyone who has witnessed illegal dumping to come forward as the criminal investigation gets underway.
