A paralyzed man from Stony Brook is walking for the first time in nearly eight years thanks to a new exoskeleton technology called Indego.
Greg Durso, 31, has been in a wheelchair since a 2009 sledding accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down.
Indego is a carbon fiber robotic device that fits around his lower body and legs. It is controlled by Durso's breathing and upper body movement.
Durso says he was skeptical at first, but seeing and feeling the technology work has left him emotional and empowered.
Durso is a part of a clinical trial at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. There are currently only eight hospitals across the country testing the exoskeleton, which costs about $80,000 to purchase privately.
