Drivers looking to have a few drinks and get behind the wheel better think twice now that a new state law is in effect.
According to Senator Charles Fuschillo (R-Merrick), the new law focuses on high Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) offenders, repeat offenders and those who kill others. It also limits plea bargain agreements. The law is one of the most comprehensive drunk driving reforms in NYS in the last 25 years.
Police in Nassau and Suffolk have increased patrols and are conducting random sobriety checkpoints. Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice says if you get behind the wheel of a car while you are drunk, you will be punished. She says drivers will no longer get away with receiving a traffic infraction.
