Riders on NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor are getting a smoother trip into the city today with the new Portal North Bridge now in service.

They had waited through weeks of getting off trains at Hoboken Terminal and switching to the PATH, a ferry or a bus to reach Manhattan. They also dealt with delays when the 116‑year‑old Portal swing bridge got stuck.

The new Portal North Bridge is up and running, and riders hope those problems are over.

Last Thursday marked the inaugural ride across the new span over the Hackensack River. It was pushed into morning service Friday after overhead wire issues on the old bridge.

NJ Transit used the new crossing on its weekend schedule. Today is the first full Monday morning commute for riders.
