A Brentwood man accused of burning his pit bull alive is facing new charges and increased bail.
A grand jury indicted 22-year-old Derick Phanord on two counts each of felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty. He faces up to two years in prison if convicted.
Phanord was initially arraigned on charges of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and aggravated animal cruelty. His bail has been doubled to $100,000.
Authorities say Phanord tied his dog to a tree, doused the animal in gasoline and set it on fire before leaving it to burn. The dog died from its injuries days later.
Phanord will be pursuing a temporary insanity defense, according to his attorney. His family had been hoping for a reduced bail in order to get him professional help.
