A new Big Y grocery store is now open in Westport.
The doors opened at 7 a.m. Thursday.
The family-owned supermarket started in Massachusetts almost 90 years ago and now has more than 90 stores in both Connecticut and Massachusetts.
Big Y says it offers brand products and high-quality foods from local vendors without the big ticket price
This store is providing almost 100 jobs to the area.
Thursday was the soft opening. A grand opening celebration is two weeks away.
Westport Big Y members will be entered into a grand opening giveaway to win $200 in free groceries or $100 or even $50.
Big Y and its customers are happy about this new location.
"We think our market's really going to resonate with this community. We pride ourselves in our people, on our customer service, on our community engagement. We're a family-owned business, as I'm part of the third generation of that family still involved in the company. We're so excited to be here today," said Big Y district director Christian D'Amour.
"It's really wonderful to have a store that tries to use local produce, local meats as much as possible, and I'm really excited about it because it’s right down the street from me," said Carolyn Beller, from Westport
"It's very convenient. It's a nice choice between the other local groceries," said Christian Rizy, from Westport.
Amazon Fresh was supposed to go in that location, but the deal fell through.
Big Y supermarkets closest to Westport are in Stratford, Monroe and Shelton.
