The sound of gunfire could once again be heard from the trap and skeet shooting range at Southaven County Park in Yaphank Saturday and neighbors were fired up.
The range re-opened after being closed for four years. The community has been in an ongoing battle to try to get rid of the range since it closed due to the noise and concerns about the environment from shotgun shells. The trap and skeet range is a county-owned facility, which is licensed to Mark Wroobel, a private vendor. Wroobel says he has been doing everything within the county's regulations.
A county spokesperson says studies were done on the environmental concerns and there was no danger of contamination from lead shotgun shells. However, some civic leaders disagree and say they have proof of contamination and plan to file a lawsuit.
