Nearly 4,000 teachers to be hired across NYC schools in push for smaller class sizes

Nearly 4,000 new teachers will be added to New York City public schools as part of the upcoming budget, city officials announced on Wednesday.
Mayor Eric Adams and Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos say the hires will be spread across approximately 750 schools citywide.
This is the next phase of the city’s plan to reduce class sizes and expand learning opportunities in the classroom.
The initiative was developed in partnership with the United Federation of Teachers and the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators.
Angela Ofosu, a mother of two from Canarsie, says smaller class sizes would make a major difference in her children’s education.
“If the teacher and student ratio is too big, the children don’t get the attention that they need,” Ofosu said. “If more teachers come, it’s going to help the children improve—especially their reading, math, and science.”
The new hires will begin entering classrooms in the 2025–2026 school year, giving principals a head start on planning and recruitment.
