Demonstrations are underway from coast to coast this weekend, with protesters demanding justice in the death of Eric Garner.
The call for action comes after a Staten Island grand jury decided not to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who placed Garner in a chokehold. The 43-year-old's final moments on July 17 were caught on camera as he was placed under arrest for selling untaxed cigarettes.
Protesters across the country have been filling department stores, blocking streets and staging "die-ins." Many are calling for all the officers involved in the chokehold death to be fired.
Local religious leader Andy Lewter just returned from Ferguson, Missouri, an area rocked by violent protests and looting over the decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the deadly shooting of Michael Brown. Lewter says he met with other religious and labor leaders, as well as law enforcement officials, about how to bring real reform to police departments across the nation.
In the wake of Garner's death, the NYPD is starting a pilot program in which officers in certain precincts will now wear body cameras, with more station houses expected to join the initiative soon.
