The National Park Service has confirmed that Asian longhorned ticks have been found in Suffolk County.

They were found in Lloyd Harbor, the William Floyd estate and Ocean Beach on Fire Island.

Experts say they have not been found to carry diseases.

“It appears not to have much of a public health implication,” says Dr. Scott Campbell, of the Suffolk County Health Department. “They are capable of transmitting pathogens but at this point, none have been found in the ticks found in the U.S.”

The Asian longhorned tick is native to East Asia and was first found in the U.S. in New Jersey in 2017.

Health officials are urging people to remember to check for ticks during the fall months.
