A Nassau social services worker is accused of scamming an immigrant couple from Hempstead by promising them she?d help bring their children to America.
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says Tula Baffi told the woman and her common-law husband she could use her status as a government employee to bring their children over from Peru.
According to Rice, Baffi collected more than $10,000 on promises she would secure the children?s transport by marrying the common-law husband or one of the woman?s brothers. She says Baffi took trips to Peru as part of the scheme.
Baffi pleaded not guilty to grand larceny and is being held on $10,000 bail.
