Nassau County residents who are struggling financially during the pandemic have now been hit with months' worth of penalties and late fees for missing the tax deadline by just even a few days.
Residents lined up in front of 1 West Street in Mineola Friday to pay their taxes after being penalized for missing the June 1 deadline. Lawmakers pushed the deadline to June 1 to help taxpayers, but some thought if they paid a few days late they would only be hit with a small penalty.
However, the penalties and fees are being backdated to April, costing some people hundreds of dollars that they didn't expect.
Antionette Mascaro, of Franklin Square, says her mom got hit with more than $400 in penalties that date back to April. Mascaro says she went to pay the taxes this week because her mom was in the hospital.
"It's upsetting because it's high to begin with and then $400 in penalties is unfair because my mom is really good about paying her taxes and paying on time. Unfortunately she just was in the hospital during the time that it was due."
Residents say they are willing to pay the late fees from June 1, but not backdated to April. They're hoping to get some answers from lawmakers in Albany and from the county executive to see if the fees can be waived.
