(10/25/06) MASSAPEQUA - Nassau and Suffolk police implemented new tactics Wednesday to cut down the number of dangerous trucks on Long Island's roads.
Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer applauds the work of the motor carrier safety inspectors. These specially trained officers deal with suspicious or code-violating trucks. Inspectors from both counties pulled trucks over into the Sunrise Mall parking lot to check cargo manifests, tires, brakes and commercial licenses. Dormer says the routine inspections also include K-9 units and radiation detectors that look for "dirty bombs."
According to police, safety violators paid more than $13,000 in fines last year. Police say the same five trucking companies annually reach the top of the list for most offenses. Police say these companies are Ultimate Trucking, Trinity Trucking, The Tri-State Group, All Waste Systems and Union Trucking Incorporated.
