Nassau adults playing bartender to underage drinkers could soon face punishment.
The Nassau County Legislature unanimously passed a social host bill. The proposal calls for criminal action against adults who help or allow underage drinking in their homes.
The first offense results in a $250 fine, which doubles if a parent is found guilty a second time. The measure offers greater penalization for repeat offenders. If convicted of a third violation, parents could face up to a year in jail and a $1000 fine.
Long Beach was the first community in New York to pass similar legislation. That law was based on legislation already being used in San Diego and Connecticut, according to Judy Vining, of Long Beach Medical Center?s underage drinking prevent program.
The bill will now head to the desk of Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi.
