Revenue from red-light cameras in Nassau County is on the rise, according to the latest county data.
An annual report from the county shows that Nassau County's red-light camera revenue was up 44% in 2016, and it could increase even further. In April, County Executive Laura Curran proposed increasing fees associated with red-light tickets and county services, in an attempt to tackle Nassau's perennial multimillion-dollar budget shortfall.
But while revenue is up by double digits, safety may not necessarily be improving. The same report finds that accidents are also up across the board.
Total accidents increased nearly 8.5 percent, and accidents with injuries increased by nearly 7 percent. Rear-end crashes grew by more than 10 percent.
A spokesperson for the Republican majority in the Nassau Legislature declined to comment on the report.
