Residents are turning up their noses at a proposal to allow Suffolk County officials to pay Nassau County to process excess sewage.

Suffolk Chief Deputy Executive Kevin Law says the county is running out of sewer treatment capacity at the Bergen Point plant in Babylon and that it will cost $40 million to upgrade and expand the facility. He says if the county can pay Nassau County $10 million to share the Cedar Creek plant in Seaford, then the taxpayers win.

Residents say there are problems with the Cedar Creek facility and that the extra sewage could cause a breakdown or backup. Nassau Chief Deputy Executive Chris Hahn assures that all necessary steps would be taken to ensure the plant could handle the capacity without adversely affecting the surrounding environment or community.
