Police are searching for a fake cop allegedly operating in Nassau County, who was spooked last week by a driver he pulled over in Garden City.
Authorities say a 41-year-old woman was stopped by the fake police officer at around 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon on Zeckendorf Blvd., not far from the Roosevelt Field Mall.
The imposter was allegedly behind the wheel of an unmarked police cruiser- a grey Mercury or Marquis- with flashing blue lights and a red light flashing on the dashboard. He was not wearing a uniform, but the victim says he produced a badge and an identification card.
Police say when he asked for the woman?s license and information, the driver told the man that she was calling 911. The fake cop responded that he would meet her at the police station around the corner and then sped off, authorities say.
The woman got away unharmed, but the incident raised concerns among local residents and shoppers.
?You got to be very cautious,? says Nat Watts. ?It's a shame, because you don't know if it is legitimate, and if you don't pull over, you get in trouble.?
The fake officer is described as a 5-foot-11-inch white male, weighing 175 pounds.
