Nassau police seek duo in rash of 'distraction' burglaries

Nassau police say the search is on for two women believed to be behind at least nine "deception and distraction" burglaries around the county.Investigators held a news conference today to spread the word on the suspects' typical modus operandi. They say one of the women will pose as a service worker, often from a utility or fence company, to lure elderly homeowners outside. Meanwhile, the second suspect would dash through the open door and grab anything of value from the home.Police say the women are convincing and professional, and that the burglaries often take place in under 10 minutes. Authorities have released sketches of the two women. They say they've been spotted driving a dark-colored minivan with Florida plates, and have worked with a male accomplice at times.
Police are reminding homeowners to be alert and ask for ID from anyone claiming to be performing a service. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-224-TIPS.For extended video of the police news conference on distraction burglaries, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and select the 'iO Extra' tab.Seminar held to protect seniors from thieves Police to boost patrols after 9 distracted robberies in NassauCops: 'Scam artists' rob elderly couple in Massapequa Park
