One person was killed and four others, including a child, were wounded following a shooting at an illegal party at a rental hall in Valley Stream, police say.
Police say they received a 911 call and responded to a scene at Ocean Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Monday.
According to police, a male fired eight times, striking multiple people outside the establishment.
Police say 20-year-old Deandre Carter, of Brooklyn was shot and pronounced dead a short time later.
Another victim, a 12-year-old boy, was inside the doorway and struck in the left shoulder. He is in stable condition.
According to police, two 17-year-old males from Elmont were also struck but were treated and released from the hospital. A fifth person, a 17-year-old from Brooklyn, had a hand laceration.
Following the shooting, police say the suspect fled westbound into Queens. Police are asking anyone at the party to come forward with information.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says the party was advertised on social media and organizers were illegally charging admission and serving alcohol without a license.
“This is a typical situation where a kid sees an advertisement, it looks like it’s going to be a fun time with friends,” Ryder says. “He goes to that party; he ends up being shot. We can’t have that.”
Police also tell News 12 that the operator of the venue could face alcohol beverage control charges.
Neighbors tell News 12 that the event space has been a problem with disruptive parties.
“I hope that that store will be closed forever because there’s a lot of commotion on the weekend,” says Sanny James.
Deborah Young, who owns the venue called Dopie’s World, told News 12 that they’ve “never had anything like this happen before.”
Monday’s shooting is the second in the neighborhood in just over a week.
Bullets were fired into a house around the corner from the venue on Aug. 13.
