A quick-thinking police medic helped deliver a baby girl in the back of an ambulance Monday afternoon.

Police responded to a home on Henry Street in Uniondale after a call about a 32-year-old pregnant woman experiencing pain.

The woman was being transported in an ambulance when medic Brian Matthews determined that the woman's water had broken. He also saw that the baby's head was present with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck.

Matthews then removed the umbilical cord and delivered the child in the back of the ambulance. The mother and baby were taken to Nassau University Medical Center where they are doing fine.

Matthews told News 12 Long Island that he has delivered several other children in Nassau County during emergency situations before.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano gave Matthews and two other officers citations for their heroic actions.
