Nassau County legislators are calling for a pay raise for those who participate in jury duty.
Lawmakers are asking the state to consider raising juror pay from $40 a day to $120 a day.
They say the increase in pay will create a more inclusive courtroom.
Nassau County Acting District Attorney Joyce Smith says research makes it clear that more diverse groups make better decisions.
“We know from research that diverse juries with different backgrounds and opinions have broader and more open discussions,” Smith says. “We know from research that diverse juries reduce the likelihood of a single-minded groupthink based on shared biases.”
There hasn’t been an increase in juror pay in over 20 years.
