Nassau health officials say a worker at a North Merrick deli tested positive for the highly infectious hepatitis A.

The Nassau County Health Department is issuing an alert to customers who ate food from Park Deli last month. They say customers who ate food prepared at the deli between Aug. 2-5, Aug. 9-11, Aug. 16-18 or on Aug. 20 may have been exposed.

One of the deli's owners believes the food handler contracted hepatitis A from eating strawberries while on vacation in Aruba.

Hepatitis A symptoms include fever, fatigue, poor appetite, nausea, stomach pain, dark-colored urine and jaundice. Doctors say the virus is spread through poor hygiene.

"You can contract this if they don't wash their hands after food handling or picking up dishes or drinking out of a water bottle," says Dr. John Reilly, of Mercy Medical Center.

County health officials say so far no one else has contracted the virus at the deli.
