The deadline is quickly approaching for Nassau residents looking for a property tax break.
First-time applications for the state School Tax Relief (STAR) program are due by January 2, 2007. While there are additional breaks for specific groups, all homeowners are entitled to the basic STAR program. In November, lawmakers passed a measure that offers an extra rebate check to residents who closed on property before January 2, 2006. That application is due January 20, 2007. Residents 65 or older, with an income of less than $67,500 a year, can apply for the Enhanced STAR Exemption.
The first-time filer deadline for Suffolk's STAR program is March 1, 2007. Suffolk residents must contact their town halls, while Nassau residents can apply through the assessor's office.
