Nassau executive defends mailers that cost around $90K
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran is defending her decision to send out mailers that cost the county around $90,000.
Curran has criticized past administrations for similar mailings.
The flyers were sent to around 400,000 Nassau residents. They talk about Curran's new tax assessment system and how residents can get information and help at locations across the county.
The mailers were paid by the county's general fund, and Curran says that the cost was minimal. She also says it's her first mailer ever.
Critics point out she's criticized past administration for sending excessive amounts of mailers, but Curran says this mailer was necessary and informative. She also say it does not counter her pledge not to waste taxpayer money on frivolous mailers.
"I said mailers if it has to do with public safety or a policy change that the public really needs to know," says Curran. "And I believe this is a very serious change and the public needs to know. Not everybody watches the news or reads the newspaper or goes on social media. We want to make sure that every resident knows what we're doing and why we're doing it."
Curran says the mailer is having a positive effect and that 800 people have already signed up for help with their assessments.
