The Nassau County Department of Health is investigating a cluster of Legionnaires’ disease cases on the border of Levittown and Wantagh.
News 12 is told 10 people were hospitalized with Legionnaires’ disease in a one-mile radius of Wantagh Avenue and Old Jerusalem Road.
One of those people died, two are still in the hospital and the seven others were discharged
People can contract Legionnaires’ disease when breathing in mist or vapor containing bacteria, most commonly from fountains and faucets. The bacteria is not spread from person to person.
Signs of the illness include coughing, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle aches and headaches. It's treated with antibiotics but can pose more risks to the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.
New York is experiencing a statewide increase in cases of Legionnaires’ disease, the department says. Anyone with symptoms should contact their health care provider.
