An on-duty Nassau County Police Highway Patrol officer is in critical condition but recovering in the hospital this morning after being involved in a serious crash in Suffolk County yesterday morning.

Michael Hyland, 53, was riding on a 2020 Harley Davidson during a funeral procession in Lindenhurst when he collided with a 2020 Toyota Tundra around 11 a.m. on North Wellwood Avenue and Jerome Street.

The crash was so severe that the video showed the officer's motorcycle stuck on the truck.

Hyland was immediately taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where he was taken into surgery for serious physical injuries, officials said.

"[He] has a long road to recovery ahead of him," Nassau County PBA President Tommy Shevlin wrote in a statement. "Seeing one of our own in that condition is a painful reminder of the incredible dangers our officers face every single day—especially those in the Highway Patrol who risk their lives on the open road to keep others safe."

The driver of the truck, Jeffrey Geller, 61, was not injured.
