Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is expected to announce a bid for New York governor on Tuesday, sources tell News 12.
Blakeman (R-Atlantic Beach) has been county executive since 2021 and won reelection in November by 12 points. Shortly after his victory, he said he was mulling a run for governor.
"We're looking at it right now very seriously," Blakeman said in November. "Since the election, I've gotten a lot of calls from around the state from business leaders, community leaders, political leaders all urging me to do it. I'm going to take a couple of weeks, meet with people from around the state, and then I'll come to a decision."
Blakeman added that he was "very certain" he would win if he ran for governor.
News 12 was told Blakeman will focus on making the Empire State more affordable and safer while putting New York first.
Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik has already announced she will run for governor. Spokesperson Bernadette Breslin released a statement in response to Blakeman's bid.
“Even those in Nassau County who are closest to Bruce Blakeman will tell you that everyone knows Bruce has no shot and is putting his raging ego first and New Yorkers last as he blows up the best opportunity in a generation to Save New York.," the statement read. "Bruce’s failed statewide electoral record speaks for itself: he has lost every statewide primary and general over the last three decades in smashing fashion. And after a career of colluding with elected Democrats, Blakeman’s swan song is choosing to prop up Kathy Hochul.
"New York voters are smart. Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is beating Blakeman by over 50% in every primary poll including beating him by 20 points on Long Island. She polls as the strongest candidate against Kathy Hochul in the general election. Elise has raised more money in six months than Bruce Blakeman has raised in his entire 30 year political career. He has no support from Republican or Conservative voters or party apparatus. Blakeman was discouraged from running at the highest levels so as not to jeopardize Republicans' chances. It is unfortunate that he is putting his ego first to help prop up Kathy Hochul,"
Gov. Kathy Hochul addressed the possibility of Blakeman running for governor in November.
"It doesn't matter how many Trump cheerleaders decide to run against me," Hochul said at the time. "I'm told the Republican Party wants to make sure they have identified the most mega-Republican who will serve Donald Trump if they become governor. So I look forward to having a very robust debate about who I'm fighting for - it's not Donald Trump, it's the people of New York."
