A list containing confidential identity information of more than 25,000 students went missing from Nassau Community College last week, the university confirmed Tuesday.
According to university officials, an administrative aide of 37 years left the list unattended on a desk for about 10 minutes when it was taken. Students expressed deep concern and alleged the university acted irresponsibly with very sensitive information. Identity theft experts say the missing list, which contained students' names, birthdays, Social Security numbers and addresses, leaves students at great risk for identity theft.
Nassau Community College representatives promise to pay for one year of credit monitoring for students who request it. They say the university contacted local police, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security upon discovery of the list's disappearance.
