Students criticized campus security Thursday after a woman was attacked in a Nassau Community College parking lot.
According to police, someone jumped from behind and robbed a 41-year-old woman in the parking lot adjacent to Building D Wednesday around 7:30 p.m. The victim, who is not a registered student, drove herself to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where she was treated for a broken nose. She says the robber punched her in the face and made off with her watch, rings and money.
Some of the 21,000 students weren't surprised to hear of the attack.
"Security here is useless," Nahtanya Williamson, a second-year student, said.
However, Director of College Relations Reginald Tuggle said assaults at Nassau Community College dropped from eight in 2004 to two last year. He added that 63 security workers are on patrol at all hours and emergency phones are available across campus.
Police ask anyone with information pertaining to Wednesday night's attack to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
