Nassau County's Legislature has approved legislation to organize a fund to help those struggling with opioid addiction.
The money for the fund will come from settlements stemming from a lawsuit against drugmakers and retailers. So far, legislators say they've won about $26 million, and expect more.
The initial settlements announced were made with Rite Aid, Walmart, Walgreens, Perdue Pharmacy and CVS.
"We don't want the money to go elsewhere, we want it to go towards fighting this very, very serious epidemic that has only gotten worse because of COVID," says Leg. Rose Walker (R-Hicksville).
Members of the county Legislature say the fund will keep those needing treatment on the Island close to their homes.
