Two employees of the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center are accused of ripping off tens of thousands of dollars from the agency.
Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman issued the results of an audit that detailed the alleged scam. According to the audit, the two female employees were able to make off with more than $70,000 before they were caught.
"One of those schemes was a payroll scheme where they created artificial employees, used Social Security numbers of discharged employees and cashed the checks privately,? Weitzman says.
Weitzman says they also stole checks, forged signatures and created fictitious vendors. He says the schemes are the result of a lack of control at the agency.
The agency says it was able to detect the activity through its own means and called police.
The North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center was hired by the county to provide mental health services.
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says the two employees pleaded guilty to grand larceny and were ordered to pay back the money they stole. Both were also placed on five years probation. One was remanded to 16 weekends in jail.
