Firefighters battled a house fire on Hawthorne Street in North Massapequa Monday amid freezing temperatures.
The two-story house partially collapsed as a result of the flames. Flames also spread to one of the homes next door.
Officials say children were playing with fireworks outside the house when neighbors told them to stop. The kids then brought the fireworks into the garage, where the blaze started, fire officials say. The kids smelled smoke while they were in the basement and got out of the house in time.
Officials say the parents were not at home. The town is condemning the house and will knock it down Tuesday.
