A North Bellport man has been accused of a brutal stabbing attack at an East Patchogue deli.

Melvin Martinez Velasquez was arraigned on assault charges today in a Central Islip court after surrendering to police.

Police say the 24-year-old was recorded on video surveillance stabbing a customer at Plaza La Familia on East Main Street.

The attack happened back on Oct. 23.

Velasquez's attorney says his client is the victim, and claims he was only defending himself.

One employee at the deli told News 12 that she thought the fight started over who was going to pay for beer and says employees were surprised that the fight turned so physical.

Police say Velasquez and the victim did not know each other.

The judge set bail for $10,000 cash. Velasquez is expected back in court next week.
