Police say a man shot and killed his wife at her Port Jefferson home before turning the gun on himself Monday.

Officers say it appears the woman was shot with a 12-gauge shotgun when she opened the door. Police say the man then had a conversation with his 6-year-old son, who was home at the time, then shot himself. Police say the boy called 911 after the conversation and told the operator his father had killed his mother and was suicidal. The boy locked himself in the bathroom until authorities arrived.

Police say the victims are both in their 30s, though it is not clear the extent of their relationship. The couple?s son says there have been arguments in the past.
