A minivan that tried to go around the downed gates of a Hicksville crossing was struck by a Long Island Rail Road train Tuesday.
The MTA says the minivan driver tried to get around the gates at New South Road in Hicksville while the lights were flashing. He was hit by a westbound train headed for Penn Station.
The driver, who hasn't been identified, is around 60 years old, according to LIRR officials. He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in critical condition. No injuries were reported to passengers or crew on the train.
The crossing sign, light, signal pole and the gate were all significantly damaged in the incident.
The incident suspended service for hours. Service has since been restored.
It's not yet clear if the driver will face charges.
