The MTA offered a tour today of the new East Side Access tunnels - a project meant to make traveling to the city easier for Long Islanders.

The tunnels will link the Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central Station, and serve an estimated 160,000 riders a day. There will be 17 escalators that will take commuters to four platforms and eight tracks on two different levels.

MTA officials say there are plans to also have retail stores in order to commercially energize the area. They say once everything is built, the passenger concourse will be about 350,000-square feet.

Construction on the project began in 2006. Officials say it is 60 percent complete. At various points of construction, officials say there have been about 1,000 workers building the terminal.

Train service between Grand Central and Long Island is set to begin in 2022. The project is expected to cost $10.7 billion.
