An MS-13 gang associate was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison for his role in killing a 15-year-old at a Freeport park over five years ago.
Eduardo Portilla previously pleaded guilty to the slaying of Javier Castillo at Cow Medow Park along with narcotics trafficking for the MS-13 gang.
Castillo was allegedly targeted because he was believed to be a member of a rival gang.
Brentwood-based MS-13 members lured Castillo to the park to smoke marijuana. Portilla, who was allegedly friends with the victim, sat in the car with him on the way to the location where he would be killed.
Prosecutors say Castillo was hacked to death with machetes and buried. His body was found a year later.
The prosecution said Portilla showed no hesitation in hacking his friend to death. The defense described the suspect as soft spoken, humble and having a deep sense of remorse.
Portilla said in court that he was sorry for all of the horrible acts he committed, and that he wants to work to make his family proud of him.
