(09/11/06) MINEOLA ? Jurors in the case against Martin Heidgen, accused of killing two people while driving drunk, heard emotional testimony as the trial got underway in Mineola Monday.
Prosecutors say Heidgen drove the wrong way down the Meadowbrook Parkway while intoxicated and smashed into a limousine one year ago. That crash killed the driver, Stanley Rabinowitz, and 7-year-old Katie Flynn. Katie?s mother, Jennifer Flynn, recounted events of the crash in front of a packed and emotionally charged courtroom. Flynn says she saw her daughter?s decapitated head on the limo?s floor after the collision.
Prosecutors are seeking a murder conviction against the 25-year-old Heidgen. They say his blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit. Heidgen?s attorney says his client accepts responsibility for his actions. However, the attorney believes the evidence will show the incident is not a case of murder.
