Flooding occurred in Bellmore, Bayville and beyond as Long Island got pounded by rains and heavy winds Saturday.
In Merrick, residents got a frightening wake-up call when part of a tree came down on live power wires causing a loud explosion. The wires melted the asphalt leaving the street steaming six hours after the initial blast. Fortunately, the rain prevented any fires from igniting.
Whipping winds across the Island left trails of downed trees and wires were left waving in the air. Tens of thousands of residents were without power due to the storm. Even the beaches were not safe. George Gorman of the NYS Parks Department says the damage from erosion was extensive throughout all of the beaches.
