The Town of Babylon is warning residents about a phishing scam involving fraudulent invoices for thousands of dollars in town fees.
Town officials say scammers are emailing fake invoices to residents and instructing them to pay through wire transfers.
Investigators say the scammers are carefully using names found in public meeting agendas and minutes to target people seeking permits.
The fraudulent emails display the Town of Babylon seal and claim to come from the town’s Planning and Development Commissioner. However, officials say the emails are being sent from Gmail accounts.
The town is reminding residents that official town emails always end in @townofbabylon.gov.
Residents are urged to carefully check the sender’s email address and avoid sending money in response to suspicious payment requests.
