All the summer storms have left Long Island?s beaches not only eroded and flooded but plagued with mosquitoes.
Hurricane Bill brought strong winds to Jones Beach in July and pesky insects followed as the floodwaters settled. State Parks Director George Gorman says the recent increase of high winds has helped lower the number of mosquitoes and that the problem could dissipate on its own.
State parks officials have posted signs at the entrance warning beachgoers of the insects. Health officials say that while there are mosquitoes, Long Islanders should not be afraid of West Nile virus because of the saltwater.
