Several Muslim families in Deer Park are hoping to convert a house on Grand Boulevard into a mosque.
The building sits in a residential zone, but was previously a doctor's office. The Babylon Town Planning Board says the mosque would be allowed under the current zoning without a variance.
Neighbors say they oppose the plan in part because it involves installing a 43-space parking lot.
The Islamic Center says it is willing to make changes to its proposal to meet the residents' needs.
The planning board says it will consider public comments on the issue until June 1. The Islamic Center says it expects a decision sometime this summer.
