Morris Heights tenants plan rally about lack of resources, building conditions after fatal fire

Neighbors plan to rally at the doorsteps of 1484 Montgomery Ave. on Tuesday, nearly a week after the deadly fire inside the Morris Heights building.
The fire killed one neighbor, left 10 people hurt, and 67 neighbors displaced.
The American Red Cross provided emergency assistance to the 67 displaced tenants, but some say the hotel accommodations were only provided until last Friday.
In a release by members of the buildings tenant association, they say residents will speak on concerns about the organization of the emergency response, temporary hotel accommodations, access to usable food and food storage, transportation to obtain emergency services, mental health and trauma support for children and families, and communication with displaced residents.
The release says neighbors will also address dangerous conditions inside the building even before the fire. According to the city’s housing website the building has 206 violations for issues including mice infestation, lead and mold.
The tenant rally will start at 10:30 a.m.
