More than 480 domesticated rats that were found living inside a condemned Rocky Point home have been contained and treated.

Strong Island Animal Rescue League says it has placed 275 of the rats with adopters and fosters across the U.S. About five or six rats are believed to still be in the home.

As News 12 reported, police say they found hundreds of rodents living in unsanitary conditions in the home last month.

The homeowner, Lori Curley, is facing charges for animal cruelty and for child endangerment after her 3-year-old grandson was discovered walking in rat feces.

She is expected back in Suffolk County First District Court on March 3.

Strong Island has been working to catch and treat the rats for just under a month.

"This has been a huge undertaking," said Frank Floridia, of the Strong Island Animal Rescue League, in a video update on Facebook. "We've been here every single day for hours at a time, feeding, cleaning, catching and just taking care of these animals, giving them a second chance, and working on getting them to their new homes."
