With the flailing economy, more and more Long Island residents say they?re cutting back on the luxuries they used to indulge in.
Massages, tanning, manicures, car washes and gourmet coffee are some of the first items to go.
?A lot of our regular customers who use to come on a weekly basis, maybe we see them once a month now,? Paul Vallario, from Westbury Car Wash, says.
While the costs of some of these services may be low, or relatively low, they add up. Not going to the coffee shop twice a week could save $520 a year and getting a manicure every other week could net $910 extra by the end of the year. Carrying a brown-bagged lunch two days a week could save more than $1,000.
As consumers cut back, however, small businesses suffer.
?There is no question that this is going to affect them and some of the weaker facilities are going to have to close down,? Dr. Joel Evans, of the Hofstra Business School, says.
