Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden showed News 12 a heat map of recent reports of unidentified drone activity in the area.
The sheriff says he’s spoken to Rep. Chris Smith and is sending a letter to New Jersey’s congressional delegation urging them to speak with the Department of Defense, the FBI and other federal officials – all in an effort to get to the bottom of the drone incursion happening in many parts of the state.

"If, in fact, they are our government drones, let’s just tell our people,” said Golden. “…But if it’s not our military and these are military-style drones and they’re not from our federal government, then we should all be concerned.”
The sheriff says these drone flights become illegal when they make themselves unavailable to track, often turning their lights off during take offs and landings. He’s calling for reform and legislation to always make all drones trackable.
Golden urges anyone who spots a drone to contact tips.fbi.gov instead of calling 911.
