A Huntington Station mother has filed a lawsuit against a school after her learning-disabled son was allegedly handcuffed on the playground.
Edgar Caraballo, a special education student who also has a rare genetic disorder, has an aide to help him at Huntington Intermediate School. His mother says Edgar likes to bring rocks home to her. When a substitute aide told him he couldn't take a rock one day in May, a lawyer for the family says things went sour.
"A bunch of aides either called the Suffolk County policemen or had handcuffs with them and handcuffed this 12-year-old boy with his arms behind his back," Edgar's attorney, Anthony Capetola, said.
The boy was suspended as a result of the incident. He was suspended twice before this year for disruptive behavior.
Rosa Caraballo says her son was physically and psychologically harmed by the incident. The Huntington School District and Suffolk County are named in the lawsuit.
Officials from the Huntington School District, the Suffolk County Police Department and the Suffolk County Attorney's Office declined comment.
